150 year old clock is battery powered !
William Leeson’s grave in the cemetery puts a new interpretation to sleeping on the job. It is only a few hundred yards from where the clock he created ticks off the years in Coleshill parish church tower.
The local history books show a picture of Clock Yard, just off the High Street, where he worked. A plate on the mechanism shows the Coleshill timepiece was installed in 1860, 26 years before he died aged 78. His turret clocks are in several Midlands churches.
Bell hanger Andrew Ogden from John Taylor & Co pronounced the ten bells and associated kit at the parish church fit for another year‘s ringing when he serviced them recently.
Coleshill bellringers like to ensure that the musical instrument, worth around £100,000, is well maintained to avoid any unexpected and expensive surprises.
The clock was wound twice a week by a bellringer until battery-driven electric motors were fitted. The time is adjusted twice a week and the clock serviced every year. Church records show that the clock was bought on tick ! Few people want to see it, but it is offered as part of tower open days.

Nearer Christmas bellringers treat themselves by ringing tunes like Little Donkey and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the bells, which demands precision in bell handling. Bell ringing practise is on Tuesday from 7.30pm.
