Coleshill PCSOs deliver drugs and alcohol awareness school workshop.

A number of Coleshill Police Station's Police Community Support Officers, PCSO Caroline McMurchie, PCSO Phil McGuinness, PCSO Jane Owen, PCSO Tim Staten and PCSO Hayley Waller have recently become involved in half-term themed workshop days and drop in surgeries at the schools on their beats.

The aim of the drop in sessions and school workshops are to bring together the principles of Community Cohesion, increase awareness and to promote swift and easy access to services for schools and parents. Each workshop session for the pupils will have a different theme and will be teamed with a drop in surgery for parents and carers to attend and speak to the local PCSOs, the school nurse, the local fire & rescue service and any other agencies that the different themes include.

The first drop in sessions for parents and workshops for the pupils at all of the schools took place throughout January & early February and the theme was Medicines, Drugs, Smoking and Alcohol. Future themes will include Basic First Aid for staff, children and parents, water safety, fire safety, railway safety, transport, cycling & road safety and healthy eating and fitness.

Coleshill Town Band’s musical director Steve Fagg is interviewed on Brasscast this week.

Brasscast is a 25 minute podcast of brass band music produced once a week for your entertainment and to keep you informed of events in the world of brass band music. Steve praises the town for its support, and told the programme of the band’s strong links with local shools, from which they draw many of their young players.

News that the band now has a membership of over 100 drew a gasp of amazement from the interviewer - and a call for help with new uniforms for the band. Steve said they were well over 20 years old: donations towards new ones would be very welcome.

The podcast showcases some of their Christmas repertoire. To hear Steve’s interview

Gate watches over 50 years of health and recreation

27/11/09, by Mike Walpole - Coleshill resident

The Memorial Park has seen money spent on it several times over the years, most recently the skate park.

But how many people see the plaque on the left of the gate which records the generosity of the town 50 years ago, through the Carnival Committee?

The plaque says: "This gate was presented to the town of Coleshill by the Carnival Committee together with the sum of two thousand one hundred and fifty pounds given to the Coleshill Parish Council during the years 1946 to 1958, to improve and extend the facilities provided by the extension to the playing fields.

"They trust that all who pass through in search of health and enjoyment will safeguard the amenities for those who follow."

150 year old clock is battery powered !

William Leeson’s grave in the cemetery puts a new interpretation to sleeping on the job. It is only a few hundred yards from where the clock he created ticks off the years in Coleshill parish church tower.

The local history books show a picture of Clock Yard, just off the High Street, where he worked. A plate on the mechanism shows the Coleshill timepiece was installed in 1860, 26 years before he died aged 78. His turret clocks are in several Midlands churches.

Coleshill parish church bells pass their “MOT”.

Bell hanger Andrew Ogden from John Taylor & Co pronounced the ten bells and associated kit at the parish church fit for another year‘s ringing when he serviced them recently.

Coleshill bellringers like to ensure that the musical instrument, worth around £100,000, is well maintained to avoid any unexpected and expensive surprises.

Nearer Christmas bellringers treat themselves by ringing tunes like Little Donkey and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star on the bells, which demands precision in bell handling. Bell ringing practise is on Tuesday from 7.30pm.
